Objective

Intuitive Driving Experience

For this assignment, I was tasked to create a user interface for a self-driving car. The objective for this project was to create main UI pages as well as demonstrate the use of this interface through two user scenarios. Design decisions are informed through research such as surveys.

Challenge: Designing a usable and accessible interface based on research.

Solution

Designing for the Future

I designed a car interface that focuses on customization and incorporates features that respondets wanted.

Research

Car Deconstruction

To better understand the UI design in a car, I deconstructed multiple car interfaces and noted pages and levels of customization for settings and apps. This will further inform my design decisions as well as help me create the information architecture for each page.

I did deconstructions of 2 cars: Acura MDX 2016 and Chevrolet Silverado 2019

Survey and Insights

I sent out a survey to gauge how people feel about their current driving experience. The questions touched upon their current routine, what issues they currently face, and ideal features that would improve their experience. I found that users...

😎 LEISURE
13 Respondents mentioned that they would like to sleep during the drive. All respondents mentioned doing leisurely activities.
🖥️ CONVENIENCE
Users wanted an easier way to access applications and other features during their drive (passenger/driver.
🌡️ TEMPERATURE CONTROL
Survey respondents mentioned wanting the ability to have easier control over temperature in different areas in their car (seats, steering wheel, etc.)

Design

Site map

I mapped out the interface along with the main pages and specific features that could be found on each page. Each page and feature was based on the research and what the user's felt were important in a car interface. This allowed me to get a better idea of what I want to sketch out and design later.

Style Guide

brand guidelines for smart car interface.

Accessibility

The interface can be changed from light mode and dark mode using colors that are AA compliant in both modes. Taking into consideration WCAG guidelines allow for a product that can be used for a wider range of consumers and an accessible interface.

Reflection

This interface was my first time creating for a screen that wasn’t a phone or website. This project allowed me to design an intuitive interface for a futuristic experience. I had to really put myself in the user’s shoes and consider that not every driver may want to use the self driving capabilities and that I should allow them to choose customize and choose however they want to navigate.

I learned a lot about creating interfaces for driving experiences and how important it is to create a unique visual for apps that are typically seen. Creating unique pages for apps used on phones encourages usage on car interface.
